Ferry Docks – Ouellette & Riverside c. 1930

An old view in this postcard, looking north towards the river up Ouellette Avenue at the intersection with what was then Sandwich Street. The Ferry Docks at the foot of Ouellette are visible, along with the Ritz Hotel to the left and the old British-American Hotel on the right.

Everything visible on the Windsor side of the river is long gone…

Hope everyone had a nice weekend.

  • I remember as a young girl, during the 1950's, the ferry dock area as being dark and dirty and littered with what looked like old wooden structures. You couldn't see the Detroit River from the foot of Ouellette. I don't think I realized a river was there, we always went to Pillette dock to see water

  • I wish I was transported to downtown Windsor between the 1890s to 1930s.
I'd honestly think I was in a LARGER RICHER city than it is now.

  • This view shows the foot of Ouellette Ave., a place that was known as Ferry Hill, where it went down to the Detroit & Windsor ferry terminal. On the left was the Ritz Hotel with the British-American Hotel on the right. After 1939, the ferry dock was closed as the ferry service was discontinued. It became the Showboat dance hall, complete with its own orchestra. It was torn down to make way for Dieppe Gardens and the coming of Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Yacht Britannia and the beginning our great Freedom Festival fireworks in 1959.
