1190 Wyandotte Street West – 1961

Image from SWODA

A view of 1190 Wyandotte Street West at Wellington, showing the Arrow Pharmacy. Like many buildings from Windsor’s past, it still stands, unrecognizable today.

The building is still there, still standing. Only the brickwork at the top gives any hint to the fact that an old building is under the more modern renovations of the 1970s and 1980s. Interestingly the roof framework for the sign remained until a few years ago.

Arrow Pharmacy was opened in 1946 by Bernie Friedman who moved to Windsor with his wife Ruth to open the store. Bernie eventually became the pharmacist at Woolco on Dougall in 1969, and it seems like Arrow closed sometime around then as well.

Bernie Friedman passed away in 1994 at the age of 73. Ruth passed away in 2018 at the age of 92. Ruth Friedman had a long career in Real Estate. They were the lead sponsors of the Jewish Film Festival which still bears their name. They left an endowment fund behind as well at the Windsor Jewish Community Centre.
