Metropolitan General Hosptial – 1968

Once again Friday is here! Today we have a new photo, but still a look back to Windsor’s Past. Today’s photo is date stamped August 13, 1968. It shows a nice, pre-renovation look at the original façade of Met Hospital.

Built in 1926, the original hospital section was designed by Pennignton & Boyde, and this original part has been completely obscured behind renovations over the years.

A detail shot of the parapet at the central part of the building.

The landscaped area above is today is covered by parking lots… Big surprise…

  • This is interesting, I was at this hospital earlier this week, I noticed from the second floor all the many additions to the hospital over the years, I would guess that the first addition was done in the 1970's and others were done over the next 35 years. I would guess the hospital was added onto a least 3 times since that picture was taken.

Much of the interior of the original hospital has been renovated from what I could see. On the back side of the building you can see where the original hospital was by the colour of the bricks and the banding around the building. Much of the trim and banding and trim on the front caries around to the back of the building as well.

I would guess the hospital is a least 4 times the size the the original building shown in the picture.

  • terry, that sound right. I see it when I'm in the waiting room to get an EKG done, and I'm pretty sure the OB clinic is right across the hall.

  • Any idea what that red mark is on the sidewalk? The two on either side look like photography crop marks, but the one in the middle doesn't. Thanks.

  • I visited "Met" nearly every day from Dec 11 2009 - July 15, 2010 when my grandpa was there. When walking towards the cafe' there is a glass roof through which is exposed much of the original West Wing. Totally obvious yet many would miss it if they weren't looking for it.

  • could`nt the original facade be preserved? it is sad to see buildings like this be torn down or covered over. compare the front entrance of the original hospital above and the revolving front entrance of the hospital today and there is no comparison. the revolving door of today is a big joke!

  • My grandparents home was on Lens Avenue right across from that picture and was moved to make that ugly parking lot....not sure where it was moved to.
