Having grown up at the other end of this block, I have always admired this house located at 936 Windermere.
It was built in 1916 and was designed by local architect J.C. Pennington, for Charles Porter. Porter was an early automotive executive, acting as manager of the American Auto Trimming factory which was located on the east side of Walker Road, between Edna Street and the junction with Niagara.
According to the Windsor Public Library site on auto history (linked to above):
The formation of this company was the beginning of the long association between Frank Joyce and Benjamin Gotfredson of Detroit with the City of Windsor. Gotfredson started the American Auto Trimming Co. in Detroit in 1909 and the American Auto Trimming Co. of Walkerville in 1911.
The company was set up to paint and trim touring car bodies and by the 20’s it was the largest paint and trim company in North America, with operations in Detroit, Cleveland and Los Angeles to name a few.
The American Auto Trimming Co of Walkerville was put in place to provide paint and trim for the Model Ts built by the Ford Motor Company of Canada.
Benjamin Gotfredson and Frank joyce also established the Gotfredson Truck Corp. and merged the two companies in 1925 to form the Gotfredson Corp.
A nice well kept house, and another part of Windsor’s past.

I agree. I have also liked that house as well. There are some interesting architectural features that really make that house stand out.
Thanks for sharing.
it has a double lot in an area where homes are packed in tightly and few have a driveway
I know the owners of this house and been inside. The cabinetry and wood work has been nicely preserved. Having seen many drawings from the Pennington archive it does not surprise me to find out he was the architect.
Nice to see someone taking interest in architecture, and creating a discourse at the same time.
Regards
Nice dutch colonial.
It has a great Wisteria plant over the side door. I think it changed hands recently and the new owners cut it back but it's still beautiful in bloom. The old house on the south west corner of CHILVER AND Niagra also had a beautiful wisteria behind their house. As a matter of fact there are some great gardens in that neighbourhood. One of the more interesting ones when it is in bloom is Dr. Percival's old house. Maybe you could do a feature on some of the neighbourhood gardens in Windsor?
By the way- great post on the railway stations!
I think this house was sold a few years back. It was reasonably priced and sold rather quick if I am correct. Very nice home.
Yes Andrew I was in this house during the Xmas holidays. Beautiful wood inside :)
Lucky owners!!
i always look at this house when i past by, and i don't even mean to. it always just pops right out at you. beautiful home.
thanks Andrew!
I lived the prime years of my childhood in this house (5 to 11) so it will always be MY house. My Dad bought it from a widow who was moving back to Montreal and paid $12 000 for the house in 1956 and sold it for $10 000 in 1962. Great side yard gardens with a nice Magnolia in the middle . Great memories and nice to see my house on International Metropolis.
This came up for sale while we were still living in Edmonton. I would've loved to have had a crack at buying it.
