872 Chatham Street East

Darren from Photo404, pointed out this house to me, that I had never noticed before.

Tucked away on Chatham Street, it stands abandoned and hidden behind an overgrown forest.

One of the most odd features is the original Victorian porch, with the half cut off posts. Odd.

Not much background on this one, it’s listed in the 1923-24 city Directory as being the home of Samuel Katzman. The book “The Jews of Windsor” lists Sam Katzman as being one of trustees of the Ford City Hebrew School, that was founded in 1926.

It’s sad that the historic homes of Windsor that once belonged to prominent citizens are tossed aside so casually.

  • I wonder if the family name has anything to do with the Katzman's of strip club fame here in Windsor, though a slight difference in spelling?

  • Interesting looking house, too bad it's hard to really see it. Don't see nice details like that anymore. It may be too far gone to save at this point. At least it likely gave years of faithful service to its owners.

  • Actually, it doesn't look bad at all. The mortar joints look awesome, unless of course, that's insul-brick.

  • I used to live right around the corner on Parent St. I vaguely remember the red house. But back in the mid-70s, it was always kept up more than most in the neighborhood.
I can't be sure, but I remember an older couple with some kind of European accent living in the house during the seven or eight years I lived in on Parent Street.
I think the empty lot to the west was there then. And north of the empty lot, I think, was a flower shop.
