New Windsor Salt Office – 1953

From the collection of John Morand

A few shots of the “new” office building on Prospect street, opened in 1953. This picture shows the grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremony.

This one shows a full parking lot, and is probably taken on a regular work day, it’s dated 1952, so it must have been once exterior construction was completed?

This one shows a paved parking lot, while the picture above shows a gravel lot. This one must have been a picture taken once all the finishing touches were applied.

The building is still there at the end of Prospect and is largely unchanged in the last 60 years.

Have a good weekend everyone! See you back here Monday.

  • I think the last photo with the paved parking lot must be several years later, the factory roof behind the building has changed and new smoke stack has appeared.

  • I'm assuming the little guy up front is the BIG BOSS he looks like his head doesn't belong on that body I remember as a kid I was in the cubs and we had a tour of the mines and each of us got a chunk of raw salt cool looking old cars

  • Gary, yes he was the 'Big Boss'. He was also mayor pf Ojibway and County Warden. As an infant he suffered a severe back injury and was lucky to survive as it was the late 1800s. That is the reason for the 'deformity'.

  • Thanks for sending these. Wow, I sure would like to have some of those old cars today..they would be worth a mint. Brings back a lot of old memories, some of those pictures were probably before my dad even started there. As to the parking lot, I don't believe it was paved until one of the office clerks fell on the frozen stones during the winter. So that would put it probably mid 70's early 80's, what do you think? When did they add the silos??
