Red Cross – 1226 Ouellette Avenue – 1949

This building was located at 1226 Ouellette, just south of Gilles, and was for years the local Red Cross building. It was designed by local architects Sheppard & Masson, and was built in 1949, and it opened in May, 1950.

For the life of me I don’t remember this place. I’m assuming that it was closed about the time the one on Plymouth & Grand Marais opened? Does anyone remember when it was demolished?

Sorry for the lousy picture, it’s the only one I’ve ever come across…

Interestingly the vacant lot where it once stood, still has a sidewalk that must have went up to the building…

  • Thank you I have been trying too remember for the longest time what was on that lot and now I remember the red cross building was there but just not sure when it was torn down.

  • I remember in the 50's my mom and aunt took some kind of homecare course there i recall this photo she had of her graduating class they all had white nurse looking outfits on according to her they did the course in this old red cross building it's a dam shame that all thats left of this spot is a empty dirty looking PARKING LOT!! windsor's specialty

  • Does anyone remember "Original" RED CROSS building-right at foot of Ouellette Ave. Bernice the bus driver would pick me up and bring me there when I was 4 years old. This is before 1226 was built.

  • Tim Samson,

Where was it at the foot of Ouellette? That's a popular corner, and many articles exist on it, but I don't recall anything about the Red Cross. I can't find anything in a search of the site.
