501 Erie Street West – Demolition

Photo © Will Foot

Today’s photo comes courtesy of my brother who happened by Erie and Bruce yesterday. We first looked at this place back in October, 2008. If you take a look at the pictures in that post, you’ll see a copy of the order posted to the building. That order was:

AN ORDER TO DEMOLISH THE BUILDING AND CLEAR THE SITE ON OR BEFORE AUGUST 1, 2008.

Demolition finally got under way yesterday.

So…

From and including: Friday, August 1, 2008
To and including: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

It is 1370 days since the original deadline to have the site cleared.

Or 3 years, 9 months, 1 day.

This should leave someone very ashamed and embarrassed.

  • The most brutal house downtown that needs to be torn down though is on Janette on the east side in the 400 or 500 block or so. The thing hasn't even had a roof for a couple years!!

  • you must be talking about the one that had it's roof burned off they were working on it for awhile then just up and quit update on the Erie street apartments nothing has happened what you see in the photo above is the same as what is there now ..only difference is the front lawn is now a weed patch about 3ft high HEY!! Fulvio are you listening get the weeds cut!!

  • The entire structure is up for Municipal Tax Sale on May 23, 2012. Each unit is up for tender individually. It will be interesting to see if any one person/organization buys them in their entirety. Or if a number of individuals buy them separately. Good luck to all who spend their money!

  • If I remenber correctly.....all but the BACK wall was removed due to some weird zoning thing when the reno was done in the 70's. I believe my dad said that the city would'nt let them tear them down, so they had to leave a wall up and "rebuild". Makes sense since in recent years it was the rear wall that was failing !
