Walker Power Building

During the summer, the following picture was posted on this site:

In that post I wondered about the addition of the fourth floor that was going on the Walker Power Building.

As you can see in this photo they are clearly working on adding the top floor.

The building was designed in 1911 by architects Stahl, Kinsey & Chapman, but I’m not sure who designed the top floor addition.

This building is frequently called the Peabody Building. It was attached to the Peabody Building which was on the west side of it, but the Peabody was long ago demolished.

Here’s a photo I recently came across of the building back in 1913, when it was still new, and only three floors.

If there’s any building in Windsor with a underused potential, it’s this one.

  • Wow...Thanks to Ron Marshton...I'm just coming into these photographs and discussions of this awesome Windsor landmark. Like many of you I have fancied this building for may reasons in the past ranging from it being Band Rehearsal space to and a Rave Party haven (I partied in on several occasions in the 80's-90's) to it being literally an unmistakeable Riverfront landmark when out for a Sunday drive and/or when giving directions....

More recently my interest in the Building is more from a Heritage Preservation perspective and that's how/when I also came to know that it is formally know as the Walker Power Building and not the "Peabody Building" as most of us know it as.

While I won't outline in detail what my current plans are for doing more than just talking about "what if" with regard to this building I will at least say that it needs to be tied to its historical reality of being a Hydro-electric plant for Windsor/Walkerville and our designation as the Automotive Capital of Canada. For those of you who'd like to be working proponents of it's restoration please contact me offline as I and others who are adamant about the preservation of this notorious edifice are in the formal process of forming a Steering Committee as the so-called "Friends of the Peabody/Walker Power Building". Stay Tuned~

  • Can we get this building reused finally? If I had the money I would buy the whole place renovate it and turn it into my home. Hate seeing it sit there unused, but I can't complain, anything is better than it being demolished.
