General Brock School – 1927

A neat old photo of the original General Brock School in Sandwich. Built in 1915, the building was designed by Detroit Architects Edward Van Leyen & Edward Schilling two years earlier in 1913. The same firm was also responsible for the design of the original section (1918) of the recently demolished Prince of Wales school.

The original General Brock was demolished in 1999, and the new school opened on the same site at the corner of Sandwich & Brock Streets in 2000. The photo above is dated August 7, 1927, but appears a reprint of an earlier photo. It came either from the Detroit Free Press or Detroit Times.

If you look closely you can see the streetcar tracks along Sandwich St. along with the overhead wires…

  • that's a nice old school. is there a specific reason aside from "more room" that it came down? i just can't see myself not thinking it wouldn't be a beautiful administration section attached to a brand new school. i suppose property constrictions.....
let's hope the treatment john cambell is getting becomes a trend.

    thanks Andrew!
