Make A Date… For The Time Of Your Life – Elmwood Part I

This brochure dates to about c. 1955, upon the opening of the Motor Hotel.

Not only were they the LARGEST, but they were also the GAYEST supper club in Canada.

This was the line up of the main guys in charge of the Elmwood. I wonder if any of them are still around? I bet they could tell some stories…

These rooms were once a first class destination, now they are home to recovering addicts.

The dining/show room and bars were well known on the entertainment circuit. It seems like back then everyone had an Imperial Room.

Tomorrow – More on the Elmwood –

  • My sister Michele is mostly accurate. I was 13 when Sammy Davis, my father, Jack Madden, his bass player, Johnny Ambrose and I played Roseland Golf Club in Windsor. It was the summer of 1960.
Sammy was just beginning to learn the game. He struggled, but we howled with laughter through the six holes he played with us. He got flustered and quit after the 6th hole and took a cab back to the Elmwood. I guess he got upset that a skinny 13 year old was getting the better of him. The three of us finished our round by the way.
I grew up often sitting on the bandstand watching rehearsals for the best performers on the planet in the 60s and 70s. What a charmed life. I'm now retired after a wonderful pharmaceutical and musical career. My son, Jeff Madden has inherited the musical genes from his dad and his grandfather. He starred as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys in Toronto and Australia - Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. I'm presently in Sandestin, Florida and still swing a club.
