Sticking with the Essex County theme again today, we head back to Essex…
According to Wikipedia, Essex District High School “… was founded in 1885 and is the oldest operating publicly funded high school in Ontario”
The original building burned down in February 1921, and Pennigton and Boyde were hired to design a replacement. The replacement building seen above opened with classes in September 1922.
Much expanded, the original section is still standing in the middle of the building. In my notes I show an addition designed by J.C. Pennington in 1948, although I suspect that it is hardly the only one. 🙂

They were a great firm. I like a lot of what they had designed. That addition fits perfectly with the school.
LOL that picture makes it look MUCH bigger than it actually is. So funny! Not that it’s really small just looks really really long in that pic.
Any pictures of the pre-February 1921 school?
I just went on the school’s website. If you click this link it will bring up the photo albums for the school. The 3rd one in is titled 125th day events. The first picture in the group of 30 has a photo for the original school on the top right hand side of the page.

North Americas history will only be remembered as glass and steel. Shame.
