Located at Woodward & Nevada between 6 and 7 mile roads, across from Palmer Park, this beatuy caught my eye the other day.
Built in 1923 the Gormar Apartments has seen better days, however I’m sure with its location, it was at one time quite a fashionable address. It was built in 1924, and is currently owned by the City of Detroit having been repossed for back taxes on June 24th, 2005. It’s had a yo-yo value over the years, selling for $90,000 in 1979, $155,000 in 1982 and $30,000 in 1993.
Still a hansome building, hopefully it gets saved from both the elements and the wrecking ball.
While I don’t believe I ever went inside these buildings, I did hang around the vacant lot on the south side a lot c. 1970-71. (I grew up a couple of blocks away on Worcester Place.) A friend of mine had built a “fort” there out of branches and stuff. Just before I gave up my Shopping News route I stashed most of my last delivery in the field there, until some guy started shouting at me from a window of the Gormar. He told me to use the dumpster in the alley behind.
