Devonshire Race Track – c 1927

A postcard view from the late 1920s showing the Devonshire Horse Racing Track. Everyone is out in their finest attire for a day at the track.

Today the track is long gone, replaced with the shopping mall of the same name.

  • I often confuse Devonshire and Kenilworth race tracks. Where was the latter? I used to think the famous match race between Sir Barton and Man 'o War was held at Jackson Park, but wasn't it at one of the other two? Imagine having to wear a suit and tie in a Windsor summer to a simple place like a race track.

  • The match between Man 'o War and Sir Barton was held at the Kenilworth track which is now a residential subdivision. It is covered very well in an earlier IM post.

  • @Lanny - Kenilworth was south of Devonshire, on the west side of Howard Avenue, south of the Canada Southern/Michigan Central/New York Central/Penn Central/Conrail/Canadian National tracks.

  • Horse racing must have been a big deal back then as Windsor had (at least) three race tracks over those years.

  • Jeffs & gary, it was quite a big deal. Also, I believe that Michigan did not allow horse racing, for a time, so it drew crowds from there. And don't forget Windsor's fourth horse racing track, which is still standing...for now.
