Windsor Airport

Another older postcard view. Today’s postcard features Windsor Airport, and the shiny new terminal building.

Sitting on the ramp is a Trans-Canada Airlines Vickers Viscount.

According to Wikipedia, the Viscount was the first turboprop aircraft in the world, they entered serivce in 1950 (the first one was built in 1948), the last ones were delivered in 1964, with a total of 445 being built. British Airways retired the last of their Viscount’s in 1985, although they remained in use with charter flights. As of May, 2008, 3 Vickers Viscounts remained in passenger service in Africa.

On July 9, 1958, there was an accident with one, where a propeller flew off into the cabin killing a passenger, and injuring several others. This occured on a Trans-Canada Airlines flight from Chicago to Toronto, over Flat Rock, Michigan. Declaring an emergency, the flight diverted into Windsor Airport, where it was safely landed.

Details on that accident can be found here on Wikipedia.

If you’re heading out tonight for a Halloween Party or for any other reason, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for any youngsters.

Any don’t forget to set your clocks back Saturday night. Daylight Savings Time once again ends. Enjoy your extra hour of sleep, and I’ll see you back here Monday.

Have a safe weekend!

  • First thought--the Terminal doesn't look all that different -- not that that's a problem - it's a suitable, efficient terminal that has retained some of it's mid-century style.

One thing the Viscount was notable for - as evidenced in the photo were it's huge, oval-shaped cabin windows.

  • Nice photo!! Love to see planes/airport photos. It's a shame Windsor's airport hasn't blossomed into an alternate of Detroit Metro. Maybe once the economy improves, there will be more RJ service. It would be nice to fly to Florida non-stop from Windsor.

  • Ah, the Sam Roberts video -- I've been meaning to post that on Spacing for a while. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: air travel. Seems like a losing economic horse to hitch any hopes to. Trains yo. High Speed Trains is where it will be at.

  • But those trains we speak aren't gonig to come to fruition anytime soon. All levels of gov't and the railroads are hell bent on tearing the remaining tracks out.

It really boggles the mind and I don't mind saying it but since Bush jr. was re-elected in 2004 if feel like the world has been in a version of Bizzarro. From Wall Street to the average joe to gov'ts of every nation, everything that is supposed to be up is down and vice versa. I feel like I should just move to some deserted area and live on my own to get away from a world that just doesn't seem to have any logic.

  • On the second floor to the right there is an observation deck that was accessable from a staircase somewhere in the terminal. I can remember my father taking me there when there was still jet service to and from Windsor. We would watch planes land and takeoff from that deck. It was way cool and I can remember it like it was yesterday. Observation decks at airports are thing of the past as a result of paranoia.

  • Well it says to meet at the centre of town, where the community normally gathers. Soooo... I'm guessing Walker @ Provincial?
