Despite all these years of driving by, and giggling at the name, I’ve never actually been to the famous Harvey Lo’s Yummy House.
According to this yellow pages ad, they’ve been in business since 1979. No small feat in this city, especially given that restaurants on some of the more pedestrian friendly parts of the city can’t make a go of it. Yet on this dirty desolate stretch of Wyandotte St. East at Marion, the Yummy House has been dishing out grub for 29 years.
Has any one out there eaten here? Any reviews? I’m tempted to give them a try next time I’m in the mood for Chinese food…

I love the food and the decor at Harvey Lo’s Yummy House…it is definitely worth a visit. There’s not many of these old style Chinese restaurants left in Windsor. Most of them have been redecorated and have “updated” decor. Back in 2006, Harvey Lo and his wife were extremely kind to loan items (decorations, their lectern, tables, etc.) for Montreal-based artist Karen Tam for her exhibition “House of Wong” at Artcite. Also, have you visited House of Lee on Pelissier St.? Definitely worth a visit.
It’s pretty good. I had a friend refer me and I took a date there. Well priced. I spent, I think $12 total for both. Defenitely try it.
I haven’t been to the House of Lee though. Overpriced and I haven’t heard any good reviews from my friends to justify it.
Best hot and sour soup in the city. I believe that they have not been here the entire 29 years . Seem to recall that Harvey started out on the west end of University in a much smaller location. Unique decor to say the least. Reminds me of Chinatown eateries in Chicago. Worth the visit just for a big bowl of hot and sour soup.

I WENT A FEW TIMES TO HIS RESTAURANT AND ALWAYS ORDERED THE HOT & SOUR SOUP !!!! HARVEY IS TRULY AN AREA TREASURE !!!!
Amazing, chinese food is authentic here (aside fromt he fortune cookies they give you). My parents always got food from them and we loved it. I eat more often at different cuisines like The Mini or Indian food (asian is awesome!) but that is because my parents ate chinese so often, it’s not as much of a treat. If you are in the mood for chinese, this is definitely the place to go!! Prices are extremely reasonable especially for pickup or cash (or something – I remember some type of discount is standard).

Awesome website BTW, been looking for over a couple years, this is my first time commenting. Well done, you deserve an award – well, I guess you already got one, some kind of monetary award. My grandfather attended a church and was there taking pictures from the day they broke ground. Problem is, they are on slides I think. Church is Our Lady of Perpetual Help. I haven’t eaten there in about 6 years but it wasn’t bad. I was going there off and on since about 1989 but the food was sometimes hit and miss.
Old style Chinese decor inside as indicated above. They serve both N. American Chinese (chicken balls and that stuff) along with what I consider the real Chinese food (excluding the beetles and larvae).
I’ve eaten there once. It was fine. Everybody seems to have a favourite Chiunese restaurant, pizza place, etc. Harvey Lo’s was the favourite of an instructor I had for some course somewhere and we had our final wrap session there. For many years I lived near the University and if you want good, authentic Chinese . . . .
Pfft. They have frozen Chinese food at Wal Mart…

I wonder why Patrick O’Ryan’s doesn’t just move into another vacant downtown storefront like Ye Old Steak House instead of calling it quits and letting everything get liquidated for 10 cents on the dollar. Downtown should be picking up now that the dollar’s under 80 cents US.

Take the money and run. He’s had a month long closing party, and I’m sure he’s probably made more money off the closing party in the last month, than he has all year.
Liquidate everything, and take the cash and get out. Bars aren’t money makers, in fact most of them are always for sale.
Cashing out beats going bankrupt any day…
To reiterate what’s already been said, Harvey Lo’s is indeed a great Chinese restaurant with very cool decor. It was a favourite haunt of my family’s when we were on the “eastside” visiting my Granny in Walkerville, although I haven’t been there in several years. Other good restaurants include the Jade downtown, and the Wah Court on Wyandotte West, and Wah Court Inn on University West. Ya gotta love Dim Sum.
Yeah, I’ve always been curious about this place just because of the name. I recently picked up a pile of Monthly Detroit magazines from the late 70s/early 80s, one of which had a feature on the top Chinese restaurants in the region (I’ll probably do a post on my blog at some point). Harvey Lo’s was high on the list – it did start on University, where Wong’s Eatery replaced it (Lo and Wong were partners in the earlier incarnation of Yummy House, then opened their own restaurants in ’79). My father and I loved the rainbow fold at Wong’s.

one time, my brother was driving out east and just HAD to call me from like new brunswick or something to tell me about the name of a chinese resturant he had just passed.
it’s name was “HO-LEE-CHOW” HAHAHAHA ohhh i couldn’t stop laughing at it.
