Reader Tom V. sent along the photos in today’s entry. He says: “These two pics were taken on County Rd. 20 (formerly Highway 18), just east of Harrow.”
White Rose Gasoline, was produced in Canada by the Canadian Division of the National Refining Co. of Cleveland a.k.a. EN-AR-CO. A site with some history can be found here: http://allcanadiancompany.com/pg2.html. White Rose Gasoline was first sold in 1905, and it was the first premium brand of Gasoline. White Rose continued to exist through the early 1960’s, when it was acquired by Shell Canada. By the middle of the 1960’s the brand ceased to exist.
Just another example of the past being hidden under our noses. I guess this is an early example of adaptive reuse 🙂
i’ve seen this sign before! i think it’s right near the research center. can you make out what the other name on there is? “Manny’s orchard” or something like that??
This sign always catches my eye on the way through Harrow. A worthy inclusion for the site!
HEAR! HEAR!
I to have seen that lonely stanchion, marking a past history of things that were once there.
you’re so deep sometimes, Urbanrat. lol
The sign was re-used to read “Murray’s Orchard”.
I knew the Murray family well.
Jim Murray lives in BC these days, Murray’s Orchards was sold decades ago.
The plot of land is still in use as a house for migrant workers on the apple orchard lands.
Unfortunately, Jim Murray died in BC last week after a short battle with pneumonia. He was 83.
I searched Google and come across this post. I will continue to look out for your articles in the future
I meant to post this a couple weeks ago; the sign is gone! Perhaps it was scooped by someone collecting old gasoline station signs?
i can’t think of where it is on 18hwy maybe but recognize white rose gasoline
Right here, gary
This is looking towards Harrow….maybe 3 minutes out. Sign is long gone but you can still see the concrete base for it, and the arched driveway is just visible.
