Today this site is home to a Howard Johnson, the former Royal Marquis hotel.
Anyone remember this place?
They also had a fabulous night spot there during the late 1970’s into the 1980’s – the upper level of the bar during that time must have been an addition to this structure.
the Bar was called the Loft at the Madrid Hotel.Great place Was my hangout back in the 70s Only dance floor that bounced whan people were dancing. If you danced there you would know what I meen.It wasn’t ment to bouce but it did.lol Jack Jenero’s(spl)Band was playing there allot back then.
I think I might have went dancing there one time with a lady friend and yes I remember the bouncing floor
It looks like that structure still stands as a single story building. I think the part that juts out with the stone is now a brick addition, and the part with the upper level is not built at all yet, in this picture. And what looks to be a pool in this picture is just a grassy area now.
Halirious. Was just looking at that Howard Johnson’s yesturday trying to remember what it was (Royal Marquis – thanks) and wondering what was up with the place now. I see it’s an open hotel, but also has a sign out front for office space for lease. The place looks half in operation and half vacent. Maybe it is.
I don’t remember this hotel ever being the Royal Marquis. The Royal Marquis was on Howard near Grand Maris. Near the Ivy Rose.
In fact, the Royal Marquis that I know of is now a retirement home, known as “Royal Marquis Independent Living Retirement Resort”
As seen on Google Street View:

Hello, first time poster, long time reader! 😛
I’m pretty sure it isn’t just a 4 minute trip anymore!
I worked across the street at Sunoco in the 80s.
I don’t remember the Madrid.
Must be from the fumes
It used to be the Marquis Plaza Hotel (as RobS mentioned the Royal Marquis Hotel was on Howard Ave).
I recall this being the Royal Marquis for a period as well. Rob is also right, but I wonder if the operators of the Royal Marquis only used this “Madrid” location for a short period before building the current one we now know as a retirement residence on Howard.
Eugenie and Ouellette Place was not much of a corner until the Jackson Park Overpass connected 401 traffic on Dougall with the main street. Madrid opened about this time (1960). Taking the traffic off Dougall somewhat “killed” the then new Dorwin Centre but never brought prosperity to Ouellette.
I don’t know about that, Uzzy. Maybe the motel part in the back that is separate, but I have my doubts about the structure pictured here. I doubt you could build a second level on that thing anyways. I think it just sits in basically the same spot.
Comparing a 1967 aerial and one from today, I just don’t see it. You could be correct, of course. lol
No, you couldn’t build a second level. But not all of is 2 levels. I’m pretty sure the single story section to the north is what is pictured here, and the much larger 2-story building you see today was a large add-on at a later date.
Hmm. I think I can kind of see it. What we need is someone who actually saw this thing getting built.
The Madrid banquet area was in operation in 1975 when I attended a wedding reception there.
Yes this was the Marquis Plaza Hotel up until recently.
It only recently became a Howard Johnson.
The other one on Howard that is a retirement home was the Royal Marquis.
I only know this because I stayed in both (before they changed over within the last 10 years)
This was the GRAND Marquis. I always got the two confused as well.
The pic above is of the ‘Dining Room’ section only. I believe there was a taller section, kind of ‘boxy’ that housed the hotel office, this would be to the left side of the dining room section, past the decorative cement fence…..I could be ‘confused?’…hehe
ohh as I recall as well….after looking at the google map….the Madrid sat well back from Dougall Ave., not as close to the road as the present Howard Johnson, so….perhaps the present building is new altogether. I see behind, the original hotel/motel room part….I guess I’ll have to take a drive there and see exactly what is behind the Howard Johnson and if any of the buildings could have been the original Madrid, as the pic above…
Jay, it’s on Ouellette, not Dougall. And I’m pretty sure that section of Ouellette is a lot wider than it used to be. It’s 6 lanes, plus median right in front of the hotel. It was probably 4 lanes back then. It’s almost certainly the same structure will add-ons.
I remember it well and how things played out at the end, right Chris!!!!
