On Walker Rd., just south of the no longer existent Cataraqui Place, stood the Kerr Engine Works plant. The plant had two divisions, Kerr Engine Works and Standard Foundry & Supply Co.
A view of the 1937 Fire Plan
An artists view of the plant c. 1910.
As time went on Kerr closed its doors, yet the foundry continued. The foundry was sold, and the search for a more suitable home took place in the early 1960’s.
The site (as seen in this 1963 photograph) for the new foundry was chosen at 3827 Peter St., and in 1965 the plant opened in it’s new home with a new name: Standard Induction Castings. The plant closed for good, in the summer of 2007. Thanks to Ken for the scans of the photos included in today’s post.
The aerial survey photo from 1963 did yield a few interesting items…
This school at Chappell and Peter? Westenders, anyone remember this one? Today it is just a vacant lot.
The old Chappell House/Lido/Lido Venice/Rum Runners/President’s Club. A nice view of the old roadhouse before she was altered and met her sad end.
Did Cataraqui Place continue from Cataraqui St. on the East side of Walker Rd? Just wondering.
Jane, yet is was a cul-de-sac extenstion that ran between Walker and the train tracks.
Today it is under the mini-storage on Walker.
I’m pretty sure the school you mention was the long demolished Edith Cavell Elementary School (not sure of the spelling). My father taught there in the 70s, I believe it was demolished some time in the late 70s/early 80s.
I’m fairly certain that Edith Cavell was on the eastside (it’s been converted to condos today).
By the 60’s we were dealing with an amalgamated school board, although it’s possible, I find it hard to believe that there were two Edith Cavell’s (althogh nothing would surprise me) One in Windsor and one in Riverside. I have never seen any reference to a demolished Edith Cavell.
Humm….
The school would have been very close to Brock – so I doubt it would have been another public school. – maybe a Catholic elementary school?
Edith Cavell is definitely in Riverside and still stands.
Oopsy…apparently I screwed up on the name…I’ll find out what it was actually called. Give me another chance! 🙂
OK…Second attempt…I spoke with my father, he says it was called Western Elementary School, a public school. He’s not sure when it was demolished, but he’s fairly certain it was prior to 1990 or so.
wfw is correct, I loked it up in an old directory and it was Western Public School. I don’t remeber ever seeing it, and I moved to Windsor in 1989, so it was probably demolished around that time.
Thanks for looking into that.
I forget how there used to be “neighbourhood” schools. I don’t remember this one at all – maybe even before my time.
As usual this site finds the answers. Thanks everyone.
Interesting item about Edith Cavell School here:

That school is the old Western Public Scholl. I went there for kindergarten and grade 1
I worked at standard inductions location on peter st. From 1995 till 2007 when the doors closed , the school was already gone then. Now just last month the wrecking ball got the standard induction building. Great site Andrew keep up the good work.
There was also a plaque in the office that was” walker forge” I think but not sure and I had never known about standard foundry over by walker road.
Thanks again
