This picture shows the building today. Despite losing the top, it still looks pretty good.

Where did that thing on the roof go?
The Cupola and the railing on the roof must have been removed when this building was being renovated. The original door appear to have been replaced as well. I will say that the replace windows look true to the style of the original wood windows.
The rest of the exterior appears to be unchanged.
i wonder if that building to it’s right was an apartment building
The top of roof detail was called a ” widows walk ” and cupola used as a way to vent the attic space.
I believe the building next door was the old Vendome, or Vendome Hotel. It apparently burned down in ca. 1985, but had been in questionable shape for a long time.
Does anyone remember a building near there that was in the shape of an inverted ice cream cone? It was, oddly enough, an ice cream outlet. Odd piece of architecture, but neat nonetheless.
I remember the inverted ice cream cone. It was in front of the post office at Mill and Sandwich in the 60’s.
Jim G is correct, that building was the Vendrome Hotel.
I thought Andrew ran a peice on it but a search turned up nothing.
I know there was a picture of it on From the vault in the Star…..

i remember the old inverted ice cream cone in front of the post office oddly enough the 2 twisty treat ice cream stands in the city had the same style of building it’s too bad they couldn’t have somehow sved that old ice cream stand on sandwich something like that in dieppe park or another location in the city would have been really something these days

I thought the cone was to protect the fountain in the winter months.
I visited a fellow student who lived in this building back in 2003. There was a floorplan in the basement so that current tenants could see “where they lived”. My friend was in a police office that actually maintained a cell. Very interesting building.
