Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Back in July, we looked at Walkerville’s High School, and in the comments of that thread, some were asking about post cards of the school, so I dug one up.
It is a handsome building, but whoever was responsible for the window replacement should have lost their job.
The window replacement was done equally shoddy at Ada C. Richards. In each case they swapped out large, albeit inefficient windows, for more brick and less style. Obviously done with economics in mind.
Actually, while I agree that the smaller windows are uglier than the gorgeous full glass ones originally installed, you will find many old schools’ windows re-done in this fashion and this is to help increase the effect of the central A/C units installed in these schools. Less open glass exposed to sun, light and heat, helps decrease costs. Central A/C wasn’t even an idea for the original schools’ designs.
I’m pretty sure Kennedy is the only high school in the area that didn’t destroy their windows. When they replaced the windows they went with a very classic look which prbably best replicates the originals.
Haha. A/C? There’s NO A/C in Walkerville.
The windows looked much better before, and the only rooms with an “A/C” are the offices on the first floor and… well… most of the first floor. Most classes are upstairs.
The school that I find it a shame to have changed was Catholic Central. I wasn’t even born yet when CCH had their windows on the Tecumseh road side in it’s original state. Those big beautiful windows that are now all bricked up inside and out. There is a lot on the inside that’s different as well but that’s because I did much research into the history of Catholic Central in the exact building they are leaving but hey if it was possible I’d write my own article on this site about it. But I agree Kennedy (though I never went to the school) is basically the only school with it’s original “identifying” features still gleamingly in tacked.
Hey Andrew if you’d allow I could do an article about Catholic Central before they close it down and move it! 😀
I’d love to!
