Another old Newspaper photo, today’s subject is The Bin Place, located at 3176 Sandwich Street. The photo was taken March 27, 1972.
As far as I can tell, this building would have been located at or near the north east corner of Sandwich & Mill. Home to the former CIBC bank?
Any old westsiders out there with any memories of the place or building?

Sorry for the delay getting this one posted. It was all set up and ready to go, I just forgot to schedule it for this morning!
If that’s the northeast of the Sandwich and Mill corner, is that the little parkette to the left of the photo? Has the park been there that long? Maybe it hasn’t but whatever was torn down as part of the bank-building was gone and it was still vacant.I don’t remember the Bin Place (In ’72 I was living on Argyle with a baby and kind of narrowly focussed.) but it would be the building that originally (in my time) housed Bogin’s Dry Goods which I only wish I had pictures of or could describe adequately!
The address is a little off, but that looks like it could be Rock Bottom today – except with garage doors where the windows and double doors are, and the brick painted yellow.
AB – Could be, I’ll have to drive by and check it out…
This looks like the building right next to the parking lot for the Dominion House. I don’t know what it is now but someone correct me if I’m wrong there used to be a bicycle shop there.
Don – that would be courtesy bicycle, you could very well be right, but if i’m not mistaken, that building has older arched windows…looks more like willy’s bait and is attatched to another old building to it’s left.
AB – i don’t know if it’s rock bottom either…i’m pretty sure it has 3 windows on the second floor. plus the building to the right of the bar is just as old as it is.
there are quite a few gaps in the streetscape on that part of sandwich however….
i know at least part of that parkette was occupied by a very large home of sorts, it’s in a 1920’s postcard i have, which i can’t find and probly shows that building.
ok i just found the postcard and i can say with almost 100% certainty that it wasn’t between the DH and mill on either side of the road.
did some googling and 3154 is Courtesy Bicycles. So its on that side of the street towards Mill, and is most likely now a parking lot.
Dr. Greg Hanaka’s office is 3170, so this must be immediately west of his office, if it still exists.
Please do a drive by Andrew, and tell us what you find. 🙂
Right next to Dr. Greg Hanka’s office is 3180 Sandwich which is where we live and across from me is Billy’s which use to be Good Will and next to us is an empty lot followed by the old CIBC Bank which is now Fantastic Sams. Can’t be The Rock Bottom as it is the 3200 block. The Bike Shop is still there and The Dominion house so could and most likely the corner of Sandwich and Detroit street Which would most likely also the old bake shop. My son Rob and I were thinking the building next to the bin could be the bake shop which I think is now white and the area next to The Dominion House where they have their volly ball net could be where the old bin could have been.
