Come out this Saturday between 8 am and 3 pm for the first day of the 2009 market season.
The ribbon cutting ceremony willl be at 10 am, followed by a Windsor Symphony Orchestra quartet performance.
We’ve got a great slate of vendors for opening day, with others coming on board in subsequent weeks. Please thank them for their efforts.
Even the weather looks as though it will cooperate with us.

Yay downtown market! I hope many of your readers attend to make this a success each and every Saturday. Believe it or not the success of this market is crucial to the success of our downtown. Now is the time to turn the corner and make this city ours!
I went by to take pictures and noticed they blocked off the Goyeau St. garage entrance with a road closed baracade. I noticed that the same road closed baracade didn’t end at Goyeau on University as I drove up the street and realized it was probably CUPE that moved the Chatham street baracade up to Goyeau so no one could park at the garage to see the market. If CUPE did move the baracade, then I think it’s pretty sad. If it was the city that did it, then I think it was pretty dumb planning.
I went to it this morning and I have to say, I was a little disappointed. It didn’t seem like there was very much there at all.
I’m not sure I understand why you were disappointed Commie Jay. The entire canopy area was occupied by vendors as well as the west side of the lot across from the canopy. Some vendors were repeatedly restocking their tables as their produce was selling so fast.
For the opening day I felt the new downtown farmers’ market exceeded my expectations and I’ll be back next week for sure. I’m also sure many vendors who unexpectedly ran out of certain types of produce early will know to bring more in the future.
I guess I’m just used to the Byward market in Ottawa.
Considering it was the very first weekend in this event, word will hopefully spread among customers and farmers to attend the event. The bad press of CUPE potentially picketing the site may have left some farmers not wanting to cross a picket line, same with potential customers.
Hopefully the event continues to build upon its success so far and can be one small step towards downtown making a comeback.

Yes the market was a little thin on vendors, but it’s just starting out, and once vendors see the demand this one creates, the selection will increase. It will only get better with time.
Commie Jay, the Byward is in a different league… 🙂
