You know that summer has truly arrived in Windsor and Detroit when the fireworks shoot off. Originally planned to coincide with the International Freedom Festival, this was the 50th annual installment of the local celebration.
Although the IFF has gone the way of the dodo bird, killed off by Windsor City Council a few years back, the fireworks live on, although this year on a Monday as opposed to the usual Wednesday. This was done to coincide with the end of the River Days Festival in Detroit. On the Windsor side, the Summerfest (the replacement to the IFF) is just getting underway.
Enjoy the photos if you missed it, or if you’re one of the many out of towners/former residents who check in…
What’s the story behind the demise of the Freedom Festival? I haven’t been living in Windsor the last few years and somehow this slipped my attention. What a shame. I was proud of the institution that was the IFF. Does this have anything to do with America’s post-Patriot Act loss of freedom? 🙂
great shots andrew! i was watching them from the roof of my plant, but was it just me, or did they seem alittle short this year? di it start to rain on that end of town because on my way home at 11pm the expressway was soaked.
Great pics! I haven’t live in Windsor for 9 years and I miss them terribly. Believe it or not, the fireworks there are as good if not better than other shows I’ve seen in DC, NYC and Boston…Too bad about the IFF – they were debating whether to shut it down or not when I was still there.
Any chance we could get large format versions of these pics? Some of them would make for great wallpapers.
Oh man — now I really regret not getting down to the riverfront last year to see the fireworks. (The commute from Charlottetown is killer 🙂 ) I understand that little PEI puts on quite the show — apparently the best East of Montreal. (But we say that about everything on the Island). Great shots Andrew! Always a pleasure to catch your work.
WFW – The last IFF booked several big name musical acts in on the stage. The Guess Who show lost a ton of money and put the festival into bankruptcy. The Festival went before city council for a loan /grant to get out of the jam. Council said no, and the IFF ceased to exist.
Aaron – I didn’t get any rain…
Excellent shots Andrew. We couldn’t make it as surgery on my left arm is keepin’ me housebound.
