An interesting piece of local history.
Above is an invitation to the grand opening ceremony for the “new” Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, November 1st, 1930. I’m certain it was quite a spectacle.

I knew thew tunnel was old but not 78 years old Im wondering if any work has been done on the bottom of the river bed where the tunnel lies or what kind of inspections are done I always wonder that when I drive through the tunnel
Andrew do you own a copy of ths invitation?
I am not sure about the bottom but about 3 or 4 years ago the city hadded more cover material to the top of the outer tube as it was slowly eroding due to the currents of the river.
Interestingly enough Windsor now wants to spend upwards of $75 million acquiring the Detroit side. Would you spend so much on a declining asset considering that the 3rd crossing is supposed to drive away another 25% of the business at the tunnel once it is completed? $75 million for a declining asset! Can Eddie do anything right?
By the way, keep your hands inyour pocket because Eddie is going to use $30 million of the debt reduction fund to support his job creation fund which may go against the Municipal Act.
SHAFTS – As ME stated, the tunnel is actually burried under the river. The riverbed, is actually above the tunnel. A few years ago some work was done to ensure the tunnel is still burried.
ME – Yes, I do own a copy of this inviation, it was a recent eBay find. 🙂
ANDEREW I know that the tunnel is burried under the river bed ,I did not state it corectly/what i was getting at was how has the tube that is burried under the river bed sttod the test of time from 1930’s era construction.
SHAFTS – gotcha! As far as I know it has held up fine. Consider for a minute the railroad tunnel is of similar construction and it was laid in 1909.
Completely different sort of construction — but these old tunnels are holding up well, but the 1960s era Yonge Line subway tunnels are not:
