Looking north on Ouellette Ave. towards Erie.
The Customs Booths on the Windsor Side.

The neat thing about some of these photos, was that I recognized them. A few of them were turned into coloured regular Post Cards.
Intersesting to see the finsihed product up against the original.
I bet you the DWBIA would love to have those buildings back. Not like the mis-matched ’70s crap we have downtown today.
I too remember seeing those colour postcards it is nice to see them in their original state.
the tunnel ones remind me of when i used to work at the chicken court restaurant downtown after high school and they would send me to go get change, so i would run to one of the toll booths from the back way in near the old tunnel bus access off maiden lane and knock on the window at one of the toll booths for quarters in exchange for bills.
can’t imagine that happening these days. someone just running around the tunnel plaza asking toll booths to make change. that was back around 1986.
When did the Chicken Court close?
I think around 1989 Andrew. I had my grade 8 graduation ceremonies there and we totmented the chinese restaurant next door for the entire evening.
i can send you a LOT of stuff about the chicken court to post here if you like. i have the letter from the owners when it closed since i was working there. i have old pay stubbs, photos from inside…. all kinds of stuff. will email it to you.
Sure Darren, that would be great.
I like the comparison between colour and black and white cards- they would be hand-tinted ones- a lost art resurrected with PhotoShop…
We loved the mocha cakes from Chicken Court. In the 70s, we used to take the tunnel from Detroit into Windsor just for the cake. Once, I drove over to get two mocha cakes and at the border guard’s booth I was asked why I went into Windsor so I showed the cake boxes and the guard suggested that we open them and eat them right there. I’m sure he was aware of their reputation. Have been in California these last 21 years and still think about those mocha cakes. YUM!
I went to Chicken Court in the 1960’s and ’70’s alot and in the 80’s whenever I could. I really miss it! Does anyone have old recipes? I’m really interested in the coleslaw.
Let me know.

Chanoso’s, Oishii & the Room are still there on the left. And there’s Pizza Pizza on the right.
Judging by the cars in the pictures they are preworld war two, or just after it. So doubt very much that any of the places you mention even existed then, so their still being there is irrelavant.
lol Richard, why you such a negative Nancy?
He was simply pointing out the buildings are still there and those are the businesses they host today.
It’s quite interesting really. So it’s quite relevant indeed.
Now thank him for pointing that out.
Go ahead, thank him.
