While browsing on the Virtual Motor City website, an archive of old Detroit News photographs at Wayne State Univeristy, I came across a pair of old photos of ceremonies at the Cenotaph.
Both photos were taken at the old Centoaph location at Gilles & Ouellette, next time your at that intersection think about what it must have been like with that Centoaph in the median… 🙂
I think City Hall is a much better location for it.
From 1929
From 1935
I remember when they moved it. Wasn’t all that long ago. Never really knew why they moved it. It was another one of those very nice features which our downtown once had. Think how cool it would be if our civic leaders made the call to move it back to it’s original location. Too much to wish for I suspect.
I can not imagine it being moved back to the original location, although it would be a novel idea to have it predominately displayed. However, why not move it from it’s current resting place, a little of the beaten path, to a more appropriate location. Why not at the peace beacon.
Why not level the Peace Beacon and replace it with the Cenotaph… 🙂
