Here’s one of my favourite old Windsor Postcards. This one dates to 1928, and was taken from the roof of the Norton Palmer, and is looking west along Park Street. The Royal Windsor Apartments, which were brand new are visible in the foreground, to the rear is the Royal Windsor garage, long ago demolished. My favourite thing about this card though is the Bridge.
If you look closely, you’ll note there’s no road yet, it was still under construction.
Great postcard Andrew! Do you know what buliding it is in the upper right corner? It looks like a power station, but I do not recall any buliding that looks like that on the west side. Especially that close to the waterfront.
Thanks for this – I haven’t seen this picture before. I can see the bridge from my house – we are quite close. The house is a little older, I think, than the bridge. I sometimes wonder about the people who lived here and watched the bridge gradually appear over the rooftops. (Probably no big trees in the ‘hood then) It was probably quite amazing.
ahhh the Norton Palmer. I used to go there every day (when I could afford it) to get lunch in the dining room (real china plates and silver cutlery) they had the best homemade soup in Windsor. I was working as a stock boy at Peoples Credit Jewellers just down Oulette & University about 1964 or so. WHen I dint have much mo9ney for lunch I went to Kresge’s lunch counter at Chatham and Ouellette for grilled cheese and fries also worked at Adams Furniture behind there.
