Happy Friday everyone!
Above is rendering of the interior of the Border Cities Arena, it was one of a few pictures from prior to the opening of the arena I dug up. I got an email from someone at Sportsnet who was working on a video tribute to the Barn, and asked if I could send copies of some of the old images that were on the site. I sent along a couple and told them use any that would fit. While the rendering above didn’t make it into the video, it’s still a neat shot.
The video was produced, and I’m not sure if it aired on the station, or only on the web, but the tribute was actually really well done, and a better look back at the Barn than anything done locally.
Below is the video, it’s worth watching, and a nice look at some local history.
sic transit gloria mundi…..
A bit heavy on the lamenting. I’ve spent many hours on the ice and in the stands there, but the new market will be great for the downtown.
Saw the video a couple days ago and have been following the series on the Sportsnet website. It’s a great series and I wish they actually were longer and went more into the histories of these arena’s. Awesome picture! My childhood was Windsor Arena and I’m sad she’s gone. Using Windsor Arena as anything other than an arena is almost criminal.
I wish there was some way one could build “soul” into new buildings. We have a sparkling new arena where I am. It’s comfortable, the sight lines are terrific, and it has the heart of a can of tunafish. What the old arenas (stadiums, fields, name your venue…) lacked in creature comforts, they made up in feeling.
Sit through a Spitfires game. The feeling is there. It comes from the fans, not the building. Can’t say other events share that energy though.
It really was a good video. It was a great barn. While a Farmer’s Market is very welcome (look at how well the DRA’s market downtown is) it can’t be priced too high or the farmers wont come. We will get another watered down versio of the Market Square on Walker Rd (yuck).
what happened to the contents of the display cases?.That was a hockey hall of fame by it’s self. Great tribute but they forgot about the roller hockey teams.
i think i read somethingin the star that said the development of the barn getting transformed into an urban market hit a snag i guess the developers/investers have concerns about parking well that goes to show you anything the city undertakes never!! runs smooth LOL
Lemme guess.. They want a drive-thru farmer’s market!! Windsor is the best!!! When the rest of the world is moving away from car-dependence, Windsor says nope! we need more parking for more cars!!! That’s great… La plus ca change…
I predict the market will never happen in the barn- can’t make sense of the business case for that venture…
If spectator sports are so great, why not live life on the sidelines?
Fausto don’t forget the new market has to be drive thru as you said as well as MULTI USE LOL there’s an article in todays star written by Gord Henderson sing Eddie’s praises because he spent a rediculous amount of taxpayer $$ to go fly around the world banging on doors trying to drum up business for windsor How did he put it eddie francis is the only mayor windsor has had that took the initiative to do that
