St. Joseph’s School – 1915

From The Evening Record – November 25, 1915:

NEW ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL ON EAST SIDE

The new St. Joseph’s school at the corner of Niagara and Marion is practically completed and will be opened the first of the year, relieving much of the congestion that has prevailed on the east side. It is a handsome building, containing eight rooms. The architect was Gilbert Jacques and Wells & Gray had the general contract. Sub-contracts were let to J. Lauckner for painting, Jos L’Heureux for heating, plumbing and metal work, and Gilbert Campeau for electric wiring. The building is fireproof and was erected at a cost of about $60,000.

  • I went to St.Josephs school when i was a kid in the early 50's but it was on Jos.Jannise and was bilingual i had no idea there was another st.joes in the city i recall the principal was a nun she reminded me of the nun in the blues brother's movie LOL!

  • By the late 50's it was de La Salle, run by the Christian Brothers and owner of a bit of a tough reputation. The Catholic kids went there for shop.I happened to be there when I found out President Kennedy was shot.
It was replaced by Desantis school which is now the Canada South Science centre.

  • My father went to DeLasalle in the 1940s and I went there until it was torn down. Does anyone know when it was called St. Josephs? This does look like DeLasalle.

  • Another handsome school from a bygone era. I get a kick out of this building being deamed "fireproof", it reminds me of an "unsinkable" ship launched 3 years prior. We don't hear those grandiose terms being used with modern structures!

  • nice building, much nicer then DESANTIS. yes this is DE LASSELLE pictured above on the corner of marion and niagara, went to this school from kindergarden to grade 3.it was torn down and DESANTIS was built .i remember having a few extra weeks off for the summer because the school was not yet complete.DESANTIS was accually the first open concept school in windsor at the time it was built.the sports gym in this school above-DE LASSELLE was in the basement. the city expropreated 4 or 5 homes on that block to build DESANTIS.

  • I too went to Delasalle in 68/69 for shop class only once a week.. We were bussed from St. Bernard on Meldrum. When they rebuilt the school in the late 70's it was renamed Desantis.

  • St. Joseph on Josjanisse had kindergarten to grade 10 until they added on Corpus Christi on Raymo and renamed it F.J. Brennan in 1965. My sister went to grade 9 there
