So tonight is the official grand opening of Electric Avenue: Historic Streetcars of Windsor at the Art Gallery of Windsor.
The project is a collaboration between myself, John Stefani, Bernie Drouillard, Ron Drouillard, Chris Holt and Darren Bonnici. I was lucky enough to have been involved as the guest curator.
The opening reception for both Electric Avenue & Scott Conarroe‘s By Rail.
If you can, try and make it out tonight to the opening reception at the Art Gallery of Windsor. As most readers know, the AGW is working on a limited budget these days, especially given the lack of support for the arts in the city and county, so coming out to support a show with a local focus is important.

Does anyone know what powered the W.E.&LS and SW&A streetcars? AC or DC and what voltages? I’m certain that Bernie or John would know this stuff.
” The WE&LS was Canada”s only single phase AC line — A power system subjected to extensive experimentation in the United States shortly after 1900 in an effort to avoid the voltage drop and need for frequent substations of the traditional 600 volt DC. Twenty Five cycle AC was fed into a line (of Catenary construction) at 6,000 volts at Kingsville with one substation in Maidstone” from The Intercity Railroad Industry in Canada, John F. Due , U of T Press ,1966.
No technical info on the S W&A but I assume it used the 600 Volt DC when it was electrified.
Hello, I am currently researching My family history and found that I am related to the first electric street car driver on the North American Continent Linden Brooks I have his picture and articles from the Border city News paper as evidence. Is Linden included in the exhibit?
I didn’t know of the exhibition at The Art Gallery until I received The Windsor Life. Magazine.
I am also doing research on the the earlist settlements of those who came here by the Underground Railroad. Looking for maps, business, houses and churches of the very first structural types. I would like to meet with you and view some of your early research.
I worked with srudents to produce the pamphlets for the Victoria, Old Walkerville and Sandwish West walking tours while a member of the Local Architectural Conservation Commettee.
I am also the author of the book The Houses of Buxton/A Legacy of African in Influences in Architeture.
