The Fountain Through The Years

A few different views of the fountain over the years.

Yesterday windsorite-in-exile left the following comment

The fountain should be restored and moved to a prominent civic square. Restoring the water flow would restore it’s soul. It would make an appropriate counterpoint to the cenotaph.

In the early 1920’s that exact plan was suggested. The Cenotaph sat on the east side of Ouellette at Gilles, and there was a plan raised to move the Fountain to the west side of Ouellette opposite the Cenotaph. So that thought isn’t a new one. I would love to see the fountain properly restored.

A few postcard views of the old Post Office and Memorial Fountain

This old photograph was taken in 1915

This photograph dates to 1920.

Tomorrow, a look at the fountain in more modern times. Before and after last year’s “restoration”…

  • AWesome website Andrew!!! Looks great and I went to Jackson park 2 weeks ago and i know all about the history of the fountain and i just stood in front of it , just staring at it and all it's memories and how it stood in front of the post office for many years....

  • Great masthead Andrew!! From the perspective of the billiard room me thinks..?

Is that the windsor star building in the background of the first pic?

  • The photo in the masthead is from the Windsor Club, top floor of the CIBC building at Riverside & Ouellette.

No, the Star building isn't visible in any of the photos in today's posts. All the shots were taken on Ouellette & Pitt, looking south. The building behind the old post office, was called the Victoria Building (I think) and it burned down in the mid 1950's.

  • Imagine what our forefathers would think of the way our downtown looks now? Stale, ugly, boring...a place most Windsorites try and avoid. But at least we have the W.E. Believe/Can advertisement blitz courtesy of your tax dollars...wouldn't it have been nice to use that money to improve the downtown?
