Ouellette & Sandwich - 1899
August 15, 2014
An old shot, looking north towards the ferry dock dated from 1899. On the left is the old Merchants Bank building and the Wigle Bros Hotel, which was demolished and replaced with the old TD Bank building.
A detail shot of the the streetscape on the right hand side, and…
Walkerville Ferry Dock - c. 1905
February 10, 2012
Today’s photo is from the Library of Congress collection. This shows the Ferry dock that was just at the foot of Devonshire, and the park just to the west. Roughly the area is where the large white silos are found today.
I’m thinking these might be the customs…
Ice breaking - 1928
April 23, 2010
Another old photo today. This one dates to 1928, again from the Detroit News or Detroit Times archives.
The caption on the back of this one reads as follows:
Str. LaSalle breaking its way through ice to the Windsor dock, 1-15-28.
Taken from Str. Cadillac
A neat view of the old ferry bashing its way through the ice.
Interesting to see the backside of the Windsor Ferry Docks. Most of the…
Wilfred Sykes
October 8, 2008
I came across this photo at a local antique store last week. There is nothing to ID the date by, but I would guesstimate late 1950’s – early 1960’s.

An old photo of the SS Tashmoo, from version 1.0 of International Metropolis. Launched in 1900, she sailed the river and the lakes until June 18, 1936, when she struck a submerged rock in the river, and limped towards Amherstburg, where she made it to a dock, before sinking…

The end is coming for one local landmark, and the end is now confirmed to have come and gone for another…
First up are a series of three photos from Darren, who sent along yesterday’s progress on the scrapping of the Ford Casting Plant.
Comparing it to the last set of photos, they are really making progress…
The big stacks are now being attacked…
By the end of the day…
Better Late Than Never...
October 25, 2007
For some reason I failed to mention this earlier, but a very belated congratulations is in order to my friend Wade Streeter, who’s photo of the elegant Edward L Ryerson graces the cover of the 2007 edition of “Know Your Ships“.
Know your ships is the…
Turkish Scrap
September 26, 2007
A long time fixture on the Great Lakes, and even longer as a tied up hulk on Windsor’s West Side, the S.S. Aquarama, is nearing the end of her days, and is awaiting the end in a Turkish Scrapyard.
The postcard above was postmarked 1957 and the caption on the back read…
