Ok, as everyone knows, I LOVE STUCCO!
I’ve decided to roll that passion and love into the first ever InternationalMetropolis.com Stucco Photo contest.
Here’s how it will work.
Grab your camera, head out and take a photo of that fugly stucco building you pass by all the time.
When you’ve done that, go ahead an email the photo to: stucco@internationalmetropolis.com
Once all the entries are in, I’ll set up a page with all the submissions, and we’ll have a vote on which building looks the worst in the city.
The prize you ask?
The winner will receive a copy of the brand spankin’ new 2009 Internationalmetropolis.com Calendar “Lost Windsor” a look back at some of the buildings lost over the last 5 years since this site has been going.
Full details on the calendar will follow shortly, they will be also be available for purchase in case you’re not the lucky winner. They make a great Christmas present too! đŸ˜‰
Here are the few basic rules of the contest:
– One entry per person only, please.
– While new buildings built with stucco on purpose won’t be discouraged, I’m hoping to highlight “renovation stucco” jobs. You know, the kind where someone actually believed that they were making an existing building better.
– Submissions will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. So if you submit a building that someone else has already submitted, I’ll send you an email and let you know to try again.
– Contest opens today – November 17, 2008. Contest submission deadline is Saturday, November 29th, 2008 at 11:59 pm. That gives you two weeks to track down some of those bad jobs.
– Voting will start Monday December 1, 2008 and will close on December 7, 2008. Winners will be announced on Monday December 8, 2008, and the owner of the winning entry will receive their calendar by mail.
– The subject must be located inside Windsor City Limits
– Please include the location of the building in your email, along with the photo. The photo can be sent as is, don’t worry about file size or trying to shrink the photo down before sending it. Please do not send any photos that are smaller that 800 pixels wide or overly compressed if you do resize it first.
– Have fun, let’s try and shame some people who think that stucco is a viable renovation option! đŸ™‚
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, however please note that I will have very limited email access over the next week, and I will respond by Sunday at the latest.
Great idea Andrew. I think I’ll go for a stroll downtown this afternoon!
PS. If I don’t win, you can mark me down for a copy of the calendar. Nice concept to highlight the heritage that Windsor is losing.
HEY – Great Calendar!
What are you charging per copy and where can we pick up a copy? Since I don’t have the eye or nose for stucco, I think I’ll hedge my bets and purchase a few before you run out.
If I don’t win, count me in for a calendar as well.
Any get a picture of the Patrick O’Ryan’s demo?
Darren and myself got down there this a.m. for some shots but it was just a pile of rubble by then.
The Windsor Star online, has pics of the demo.
Anyone know when that former restaurant at the Tecumseh Rd/Ouellette St. intersection is coming down? I noticed a sign there the other day that some kind of 8 storey medical center is supposed to be built in its place. Probably end up being another parking lot.
I had someone tell me the other day that the people who own the demo’d Top Hat site changed their mind and now they’re not building a Burger King there anymore because the city wants too many restrictions…
Former Joker’s nightclub parking lot? Still no development…
Maybe the calendar’s name should be changed to, “the Giant Parking Lot, former known as the City of Windsor.”
David, there is a sign at that former restaurant (now medical imaging centre) indicating someone plans on building condo units there. The sign faces Ouellette as you come from south.
Andrew
Put me down for a calendar, I will pick it up.
I noticed this morning that there are some orange fences around the grade school that stands on the future location of the University’s new engineering building. Maybe they are getting ready to tear it down? It could go in the 2010 calendar.
Have you considered making a page-a-day style calendar?
I just said that. I noticed the signs there two days ago, so it wasn’t obvious to me if was there longer. There’s one sign on the Ouellette St. side and another on the Tecumseh Rd. side. The sign says they’re going to be building, what appears to be from the picture, an eight storey medical office condo medical centre with a two storey parking garage.
Classic.
Here’s a tip for a sure winner of the fugly stucco contest: Go out behind the subject of your next entry and have a look at our new Windsor F…U… Center. You will find that it’s covered with acres of cheesy stucco-like EIFS combined with even cheesier thin-gauge metal panels (lots of ‘oil-can’ distortion) with unsightly unscreened refrigeration and other mechanical equipment all over it. This thing was ‘value engineeried’ to death by people with misplaced priorities. Maybe it’s a blessing they put it out there hidden within the east end industrial wasteland.
I couldn’t do justice to this contest, they’re all equally disgusting in my mind, almost not worth getting shots of. I think, however the greatest tragedy is the Rosatti building you posted about, restoration, hype, excitement.. then stucco o.O
Put me down for purchasing a calendar though!
