This weekend saw the end of the line for the Mother’s/Joker’s complex.
The front cuved entrance came down about 10:30 am on Saturday.
One little section remained when I left on Saturday.
While I was there shooting, they were wasting no time in cutting up the steel.
Now we wait and see what, if anything replaces it.
Tomorrow we’re off to the Masonic Temple…
Unbelievable! They’re pretty quick to act on wrong decisions, aren’t they.
I say we get the rest of Windsor designated a heritage site. there can’t be much left any longer….
If only our council and mayor were that quick with their decision making to BUILD up Windsor and not build OUT.
The new home of Mega Shawarma .
I used to live in the Elite building with a balcony facing this corner. Although these photos break my heart, thank you for posting them. She was one of my favourites.
Was Gilley’s Cue in the upstairs of this place? I seem to remember going there in the mid 80’s.
just wanted to let you know ford is back at it again. 4 or more pieces of machinery there today working on breaking up stuff.
Sam….I heard it was going to be a Burger King with a Drive thru….
Now, why would it be a Burger King with a drive thru when they already got approval to demolish the Top Hat for a Burger King with a drive thru. It’s not like they get anywhere near the drive thru traffic that Tim Horton’s does.
My guess is it will be a combination Tim Horton’s/Wendy’s similar to the restaurants in the US. They are both controlled by the same company and the Wendy’s building on Ouelette is outdated.
What a shame they couldn’t have preserved that amazing frontage, at least.
Whatever they build there, it will doubtless have a lovely layer of smooth stucco sheathing. Gah.
Come on Jodi, I think that’s a pre-requisite for building today… 🙂
Gilley Cues was next to the old Vanity Theatre closer to Wyandotte- they had the smoothest tables in town
David, that was a joke aimed at Mr. Drakich. He knows my sense of humor. I am sure he’ll throw one back at me. ….right, Sam?
Heaven to Betsy another drive thru ! Call out the nannies and Fulvio as it will be an accident waiting.People lack ears, eyes and common sense so the nannies must be all protecting to the residents of Windsor.
Build a wall with matching aesthetics to the Himalaya Restaurant as to keep the historical beauty of the city alive.
No wait, replace the wall with shrubbery as to reduce the carbon foot print to help “green’ the city.
No wait, the cars will run over the citizens as they lack brains to act as responsible humans.
What to do ! What to do !
Wrap everyone up with bubble wrap.Problem solved.
A perfectly good building gone to dust. Pretty soon we won’t have any buildings downtown except for the Casino, the welfare office and a couple of bars that cater to drunken American visitors. Can anyone tell me ONE good thing Eddie The Boyscout has done as mayor over the last five years? Even Kwame Kilpatrick has managed to do a few good things for Detroit, like fixing up the riverfront, cleaning up Woodward and getting developers to renovate the old Book Cadillac and Fort Shelby hotels after years of dereliction. I say throw the bums out and get REAL leaders to run Windsor. Chris Holt for mayor!
May be the history of the buildimg at 801-819 Ouellet before Mothers and Jokers was Rose Furniture & A&P food store, these stores had a longer history than Mothers & Jokers.
Richard M.
Richard, thanks for your note. I covered the history of both buildings earlier in this post: http://internationalmetropolis.com/?p=483
