A neat old photo of the tunnel entrance from the 1940’s. I’m certain someone out there will be able to help narrow down the date based on the car.
What a long way the tunnel has come, from the early days, to the giant remodel of the 1990’s, with more changes coming soon…

i guess they have another tunnel plaza remodelling job in the near future i don’t like the idea of them completely blocking off Goyeau street
Yes, how much the changes have come. Cars are a necessity especially in cities like Windsor and Detroit.
I wonder why we are expanding the plaza once again (and once again closing off roads)? Could someone owe someone else a favour in expanding their duty free shop?
Moderation? Does that mean we have to be civil now?
Public roads being let go to private hands is a bad, bad, move… anytime. Perhaps the city should just put itself up on the TSX..
the city is cutting a major north/south route into the core that makes no sense eddie better pray that city hall doesn’t burn down LOL
I blame the tax-and-spend Liberals. They’re putting a MTO maintenance yard. They also were able to give an undisclosed amount to the major tax collector called the “Beer Store”.
Who owns the tunnel? Who is chairman of the tunnel commishion? Who tried to buy the Detroit side of the tunnel?
i think the city of windsor owns the canadian half of the tunnel i believe they tried to negotiate with kwamie kilpatrick when he was in power over there for the american side but failed not sure
Noticed that the Cody Hall thread was closed. Saw it fenced up yesterday with a trailer that said Jones Group Demolition on it. Some of the windows were removed like Grace. No more discussion on it?
David, it should be open now
“HEADLIGHTS OFF”. Sign on toll booth.
Reminds me of the scene in “Remember the Night.” (940) There is a scene where Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanwyck are crossing the border in Windsor. There is a great shot of them at the tunnel plaza in Windsor!
Thanks for the tip, VP.

Headlights off sign, similar sign was up until the major renovation job when the retiled the tunnel and improved the ventilation system. That job was in the late eighties and early ninties.
I believe Windsor did end up purchasing the Detroit portion of the tunnel. I like the expansion they are proposing for the tunnel. This will keep all the traffic off of Wyandotte Street. They will allow cars to go by the city building both directions now and down Windsor Ave which will ease traffic that was on Goyeau.
Windsor did not purchase the Detroit half of the Tunnel. It is still owned by the City of Detroit. The Tunnel Maintenance Building is going to be built on or near the Beer Store. It is not MTO.
