[NOTE – I covered the Chicken Court before (other photos and info here) -Hard to believe this post was over four years ago!]
What? 4 years! I was thinking it was LAST year!!
Still a great postcard though. Thanks Andrew!
Had my 8th grade graduation upstairs. This place became Don Cherry’s and then it became a cess-pool for gun-toting hip-gangster wannabees (glad that place closed). I would take the chicken court any day over either entity any day.
The Chicken Court was wonderful! They catered my wedding. I remember the occasional meal there way, way back when I was just a kid.
i don’t think i ever ate threre but always said i would
Great place in its day. On a funny note, went there one time to order a BBQ chicken dinner and the waitress was so embarassed to tell me they ran out of chicken ! The family were /are running their famous desserts on Tecumseh road east, same block as Brian’s Sports, not sure if they are still there or not ?
Great place! It was a big deal to go to Chicken Court for dessert. I don’t recall actually having a meal there though. The company I work for used to give all the employees a ham prepared by The Court. I remember the ham I received the first year I was married, 1985. A 22 pound monster, all dolled up with pineapple rings with a cherry centered in each and cloves, beautiful cross hatching and candied brown sugar, holy moly. The company still gives a ham to each employee, Honey Bee very tasty.
Lets all have a good year!!!
That photo is pre-expansion. The Court then built an addition to the south, shifted the counter to the left, and added a dining room. My brother Mark and I had many, many meals there. The pre-meal bread basket contained memorable (obviously, since I remember them 50 years later) corn muffins. Andy and his wife were a wonderful couple.
I ate there a few times back in the 1980’s. Also, I remember my mom driving downtown and parking the car to run inside and pick up a cake that the Chicken Court was famous for;Mocha Torte. It was round with a hole in the centre and though it looked delicious, as a kid I never liked it! (I bet today I would eat it whole!)
Soo many happy memories of this great restaurant.Great fried chicken, hot chicken sandwiches, and cole slaw, best homeade gravy.Someone shoul re open it, keep it samll and vinteage,a possible gold mine.People will go anywhere if the food is GOOD.

Visits to the Chicken Court were a family tradition starting in the early 1950s when our family moved to Windsor from Toronto. By 1956 I was taking swimming lessons at the YMCA next door, which were sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Our next door neighbour took me to these sessions, which were held in the evening, and after the swim we emerged into the cold, winter night air with a tinge of coal smoke to it. In a short time we were at a table in the Chicken Court, ready for a piece of pie. I notice the Chicken Court telephone number was in the CLearwater exchange, and our number in Riverside was WHitehall 5-9998. As with most residents on Esdras Place we shared a party line. People in South Windsor could be identified with the YOrktown prefix. Belle River and most of Essex County still placed all their calls through the operator.
Used to love going there as a kid for banquets with my parents. I swear I can still taste the rolls.
I just barely remember the chicken court, but I could never forget their Mocha Torte Cake. My mother bought it for each of our birthdays and I have become addicted to it… Now the Pastry Table on Tecumseh road has the recipe and it is to die for. IF ANYONE CAN PROVIDE ME WITH THE AUTHENTIC RECIPE FOR THE MOCHA TORTE, I would be willing to pay a cash finders fee. $XXX, let me know. Thanks
I remember buying french fries for take out when I was always at the Y. I always remember the fries. Did they put a seasoning on them?
I remember ordering their veal cutlets with mashed potatoes, gravy and coleslaw — and they delivered it! Their food was fantastic.
I don’t have the recipe for the Mocha Torte – my sister loved it! Wish I could get it.
I was transferred to the Windsor Weather Office in 1968. I spent over 7 years working there. One of the go to spots was the chicken court. I especially enjoyed the fried chicken with honey and a strawberry dessert.
When I was 16 years old, my dad died. My mom and I had no money. Andy and his wife gave me a job washing dishes. They treated me like family. And there was always left over chicken at the end of the day that they let the employees take home. I wish I had kept working there, I miss them.
