Today we have a pair of old shots from about 1995, taken and passed long by Scott Hughes. These shots show the old, long gone N&D signs at Eastown Plaza, at Tecumseh Road and Lauzon Road. The sign must have been replaced not too long after these shots were taken, as a boring teal painted steel sign stand there today its place. Teal as may you may recall hit a peak in popularity in the 1995-2000 era…

In the background of the first photo is the pre-reno/expansion Tecumseh Mall. Of note is the fact that the former Kmart has been patched-over to Zellers – this didn’t occur until, I believe, 1998…it’s still wearing the basic Kmart facade, so the conversion was likely “fresh” at the time of this photo. Tecumseh Mall was expanded and heavily altered thereafter – 2000 I believe.
1995 is an old shot?
man i am feeling the years!
Yes, teal was the rage in that time, even the Pistons got into it! I think it was the San Jose Sharks effect or something. Nice classic Buick for sale in the first photo too.
And yes, 1995 doesn’t feel old to me?
I remember when the sign was new and the N&D Store had not yet opened. It was the mid sixties. The store itself was a change from the usual supermarket decor of the time. You could see the butcher shop through a large window behind the meat counter and bare brick covered the inside walls.
wow, the tecumseh mall lot looks bare without the east side marios there. I dont think the teal sign looks too bad, at least the yorktown sign was restored, and i believe in teal!
Kmart wasn’t sold to Zellers until 1998, so the year of 1995 might be a bit too early. There’s also two Gen III minivans, which weren’t released until late 1995.
Childhood classic though! My grandfather used to hang out in the canteen by the entrance during the early 1990s. Last (and only) place I remember that offered paper bags as well.
If Im not mistaken the very short-lived Vancouver Grizzlies of the NBA had teal prominently featured in their uniforms. Also the Florida Marlins rocked the teal in their first couple of years in existence.

now that you mention how bare the mall looks without the eastside marios,i remember when i was a kid there use to be a shell gas station on that same spot as the eastside marios.they tore it down and left it vacant for a long while.pretty interesting.
Andrew, that mall brings back memories. During the mid-60’s friends and I would buy our LPs (Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, etc.)and collect our WKNR Music Guides (Keener Top Hits)in the record department at the K Mart. While there, we would dine out on hot dogs at their food counter. N&D was a subsequent development. I remember other N&D stores at Lauzon and Wyandotte and at George and Wyandotte.
The store on Wyandotte and Lauzon and Wyandotte and George, where Dominion Store like the one at Tecumseh Mall. It closed and CIBC bank took there spot and other stores. No N&D was ever on Wyandotte St.
I worked as a box-boy at that N&D when the place was new, in the ’60s sometime. Does the company or the brand still exist?
N&D closed up shop many years ago, late 1990’s maybe? I remember going to the Eastown one all the time as a kid (we lived in Forest Glade before the Gordon’s opened in the Forest Glad Plaza).
I recall that Shell gas station had a car wash too.
And going way back I remember when the Windsor Police 2nd precinct operated out of the old Sandwich East township hall next to the McDonald’s.
My favourite part of N&D was those funny tall shopping carts – used to love riding in the bottom as a little kid.
Wasn’t there a Woolco at that location a long time ago?
What I remember most about the old N&D is the way they treated thier employees. I knew a lot of friends who worked their way through university and college at N&D, a lot of lifetime employees who were able to raise and family and send their kids to university thanks to N&D. It was a part of our community and whenever a charitable organization needed help or the local kid’s baseball team needed money for new uniforms, Mr, Budimir, the owner, was there to support them. His generosity toward the city was legendary and when he died Windsor lost a great benefactor and N&D lost its’ guiding light.
Woolco with the stone front was their until Wal mart moved to Canada, when Walmart opened the new store further west on Tecumseh Rd the old store sat empty, probabily till the lease ran out. Two years ago they started to remodel the old Woolco, now looks modern only needs more tenants.
My brother an I used to draw a suits…or robot parts on the side of the bags that didn’t say “N&D”. Then we’d cut holes for our arms and head and wear’em.
…man, we were poor! LOL! We had clothes mind you…these were for play lol.
Thanks for the memories!
I see Blondie Cleaners I used to drive for one of there salesmen, Fred Rock who lived in a trailer behind his mothers house on Jos.St. Louis. Blondies was a class act in the dry cleaning business as we had to wear dress pants and white shirt and tie to drive their trucks.
N&D were great grocery stores and their meat was exemplary. They even managed to give the big chains like Dominion and Loblaws a good run for their money in terms of price.
