This might bring back some memories for some of my readers. The original Dougall Ave. School was built in 1904, and stood until 1990, when in the name of progress, the School Board smacked her down, for a modern box. The replacement school was opened on the same site in 1992. While it seems pretty recent, it’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years already.
The postcard above dates to about 1915.
I remember them tearing down old Dougall and building the new one. If memory serves me correctly it was because Dougall School was in very bad shape with leaky ceilings and poor foundation.
This however does NOT compare with John Campbell which is in excellent condition.
From what I understand, the windows were literally holding up the walls in the library of the old school. So, it was in very bad shape. Ironically, the new building has had a leaky roof since almost day one. Every time it rains, buckets have to be placed in the gym.
I have been living in Ottawa since 1979 and although I definitely do remember the Dougall Avenue School:”…where was it located?
Susan, the school was (and the replacement still is) located at Dougall and Elliott, in the downtown core area.
