Happy Friday once again, another weekend is here, and this weekend brings us the 2010 Windsor International Film Festival at the Capitol. There are some interesting films showing, including some from local directors, one of whom is an avid reader of this site. It’s time again to support these local events, full details here -> https://windsorfilmfestival.com/
Today’s photos are timely, as they were taken 65 years ago today. Both photos bear date stamps on the back of November 5, 1945.
The caption on the rear of this one reads: “Pickets in front of Ford Main Gate”
This one in true local vernacular reads: “Main Gate Fords Windsor”. On Nov. 4th, the blockade of the plant began, with over 2000 vehicles preventing access to the plant, by blocking the surrounding roads. On Nov 5, 1945, Windsor City Council issued an ultimatum “calling for the Ford strikers to remove the motor car barricade outside the Ford plant or troops may be called in to remove the vehicles”.
That never happened, and the strike eventually ended on December 19th.

i like the detail in the first picture, how they’re still flying the jack. very nice.
The reason their flying the Union Jack is it was the official flag of Canada.
The Maple Leaf flag came in the sixties, and became the official flag then.
Windsor union workers can learn from those pictures while striking. Even though their striking they’re dancing in the streets. No need for hostilities, lol. Great pics.
I believe the red ensign was our flag in 1945.the union jack may have been there as the office building was the ford head office for the british empire outside the united kingdom.(australia, New zealand, south Africa etc.)
THe Wikipedia site flags of Canada, the Maple Leaf flag was officialy adopded in 1965, replacing the Union flag as Canadas official flag. The Red Ensign had also sometime used but was not the official flag of Canada. It is the flag of the Province of Ontario.
