Another Friday, another old Press Photo… again today from the archives of the Detroit News, shot by staff photographer “Porter” July 20, 1982, a nice aerial photo of the two downtowns of Windsor and Detroit.
Interesting to note the area visible in this corner of Windsor was wiped out in the mid 1990’s with the preparations for Casino Windsor.

Thats the old Market building in front of that apartment building near the river, sure miss that place. Has the new downtown summer market at the bus stations opened yet?

Could you show a closer view of downtown during this time period such as shops that were open and now closed?
I worked in the on the corner of McDougall and Riverside Drive (Ferry Seed Building) from 1975 – 1977 in a furniture restoration studio, then I had an art studio in the same building, 4th floor facing southwest, through 1982. A solid and beautiful 4 story brick building with roof access for fireworks night parties ;-). It was renovated into office spaces in the mid-1980’s, then sold for Casino Windsor construction years later.
That area of the City was very interesting – The Windsor Market, The J.T. Wing Building, Consumer’s Grocery Store, St. Vincent de Paul, (who can forget Stanley’s Tavern) and many other independent shops were still active during this era.

I have a pic I found on the net from Jan. 2005 of an aerial shot from a plane of Windsor/Detroit. Great pic, snow on the ground. Higher up and wider view. More of the outskirts of Detroit and the farmlands outside of Windsor.

My god look at the difference between the windsor side of the river and downtown detroit windsor seems devoid of buildings
