In the late 1950s a large expansion occurred at the Elmwood, which involved the construction of a new motel section. I had long wondered who was the architect responsible. I had always assumed that it was done by out of town architects as there aren’t many large motel developments in the city. While going through some old ads the other day though, I came across this picture above from 1960. So there it is, the motel section of the Elmwood, was designed by the local architecture firm J.P. Thomson.
Have a great weekend eveyrone. See you back here Monday.

I worked for Holmes Drug Store (Tecumseh and Pelissier) as stock-boy and delivering orders on bike. We were the only place near Elmwood open on Sunday evening. I remembering delivering parcels at different times to Sophie Tucker (whom I'd recognized from the Ed Sullivan Show) and May Britt (first wife of Sammy Davis Jr. which was all over the news at the time) to this new motel section. Ms. Tucker's room was a couple doors to the right from the wide entrance shown in the picture. I recall going upstairs to deliver to Ms. Britt and I think her room looked out on the back. This would have been '61 or '62.
Celebrating Prom nite @ the Elmwood in the late 1960`s (ordering "frog legs" of all things...probably why I`m a vegetarian since then) was the "in thing" to do...from a St Mary`s gal !!!
