  • I suppose the St. Clair Golf Club, became Lakewood. There was quite a bit of tobacco in Essex Country, back then. Is there any at all, now? And there was peaches.

I didn't know Ruscom had a b on the end. And they hadn't reversed "River Canard" yet.

What's happening between Ojibway and Essex Golf Club? It's hard to make out some of these.

  • Uzzy - It looks like it says "Truck Gardening"... Not sure what that means, perhaps it was a well-known business at the time?

I like how they called Point Pelee National Park (or Pelee Point as the crow flies) a "Government Park". I suppose that's what it is if you want to get all technical about it...

  • There was quite a lot of tobacco grown in Essex County, up into the fifties. There was three tobacco plant in Kingsville and two in Leamington.

  • The Sugar Beet crop Southwest of Tilbury would be grown for The Dominion Sugar Company in Chatham. Sugar Beets were once grown on our family farm south of Chatham on Communication Road, and were a staple crop in the region. The only remaining structure from the original Dominion plant is the front portion of what is now the Copper Terrace rest home.

  • Truck gardening in the Lasalle area refers to growing small crops of things like carrots, green beans, tomatoes, etc. for sale in the near by area or family use

  • The Canada Sugar Refining Company of Montreal merged with Dominion Sugar Company of Chatham and Wallaceburg and became the Canada and Dominion (C&D)Sugar Company.

  • Brendan, I thought it was truck gardening. I wasn't sure, because that didn't make sense.

But now it makes sense, thanks Stephen.
