An old ad for the long gone Norton Palmer Hotel at Park & Pelissier. Hard to imagine such a grand old hotel once stood downtown. It’s a shame it never survived. Old hotels just have a certain charm that will never be recreated in more modern ones. The big old North American Hotels from the 1920’s are truly glimpses into another era of travel.

My parents stayed at the Norton Palmer Hotel on the first night of their honeymoon in 1945 – the stay was a gift from my mother’s boss, Mr. Lewis, the owner of Lewis Flowers on Ouellette Avenue – my mother, Naomi Ruth McKim, worked there as an artist and flower arranger. I recall the building when I was a young man. I was in the lobby once for a coin show, sometime in the early 1970’s, I was sad to see it razed.
Great post Andrew, I love the graphic design and illustration in this advertisement.
A good friend gave me a big blow up of this advertisement which now hangs in the hallway of my upstairs. One of my all time favs.
