Continuing with the postcard theme, here is an undated postcard, probably from the mid 1940’s, showing the Norton Palmer Hotel, which was located at Park and Pelissier.
It was built in 1927, and expanded in 1929. Designed by architects Hutton & Souter of Hamilton, who also designed Windsor Assembly, along with the old GM Office Building at Walker and Seminole. It came down in 1975, just before the Prince Edward that we looked at on Monday.
The building was far more attractive at the street level than what’s there today.

Beautiful building!
At the tme this was Windsor's largest building IIRC. 12 stories and 250 rooms.
This postcard is post-expansion. Origionally it was only as thick as that "English Tavern& Grill" sign.
Thanks Andrew!
p.s. - this posted really early today! It's 23:12 on the 5th rith now.
Ok, I know I am still young, but I have never heard why both of these hotels were torn down. To me it would have seemed viable to renovate the buildings into Apartments or something of that sorts, after the hotel needs were finished, and renovate the bottom floors into office spaces and restaurants and other items...
Aaron, the reason it posted early is probably because of Daylight Savings Time... I schedule the posts for midnight, but when the internal clock of the host server is off that throws off all the posts...
... Ok I think it should now be fixed - The posts should show the correct time now... ^^^
I love how it shows Pelissier being a two-way street. I assume it was like that with most streets in the early day, but sometimes we just lose sight of our past. Very neat!
I'm always curious about building (or business) names. Who or what was the hotel named after?
Douglasm. Owner and proprietor.
The rooms of both hotels were quite small and they were becoming very dilapidated. Today these could have been renovated into condos and/or apartments but thinking back then was very narrow-minded. But then again we have so many other people who still think the same way today, right City of Windsor?
douglasm, there was Hotel Norton in Detroit in the same era as well, same owner.
Owners Charles Norton and Perry C. Palmer. Eventually operated by son Preston Palmer. Details here http://www.buildingsofdetroit.com/places/norton
