Mercer and Wyandotte

This past weekend, I was going through some old photos and discussing this area of town with a friend. I had to run over to this very market, and I was saying how just a few years ago this building was vacant and unused. Now it’s almost always busy, and has returned a building to use.

Before reincarnation as the Family Fruit Market, the building was for as long as I can remember, used as a warehouse for Veteran’s Plumbing, and mostly looked vacant. When Veteran’s Plumbing, turned its back on the core and moved out to strip mall land, the building went on the market, and it became what you see above. (Photo from 2003)

One of my favourite things about the building, which was built in the 1920’s for use as a car dealership, is this painted sign reading “HUDSON SERVICE”.

Heading just a little north to the corner of Mercer and Wyandotte, you can also find this place. Another fine addition to Windsor’s arsenal of varied eateries. Despite all the different eateries in town, the Caribbean market is vastly under served. I’ve had the chance to eat here a couple of times now, and their Roti’s are delicious. Roti Shops are common in Toronto, but I believe this is the first in our area. Next time you are looking for something different, check out Ramlogan’s.

  • This building was bigger at one time....there used to be an auto body shop at the north end that was torn down in the early 90's....

  • Nice post! Ramlogan's has vastly improved my quality of life. It's great to see the Hudson Dealership being used as well. Interesting floors in there.

  • This used to be the Hudson Dealership in Windsor, I believe this may be noted elsewhere on this site, I recall being told to look close over the door far to the left the outline of "Hudson Service" is still there. Too bad someone hasn't unearthed a picture of this as a dealership!
