While driving around the other day collecting Fire Hydrant photos, I stumbled across this large vacant expanse at Lincoln & Cataraqui. Something didn’t look right about it…
I knew that I had a photo of the old gas station next door, and pulled it out and noticed the houses right beside it.
A glance at Google Earth reveals that three houses vanished. Anyone know when they came down? Anyone know what’s planned for the lot?
Sometimes it seems you turn your back for a minute, and something else is torn down…
They have been down for at least three weeks. Talk to patrons at the bar acros the street. They will have the answers that you need.
Could it be for parking for the bar? But that bar has rarely if ever 30 people in it at on etime. I don’t even know how they pay the taxes on their land.
A lot longer than 3 weeks… The demo permit for 802 Lincoln was issued on June 23, 2008. Nov. 27/08 for 810 and 812. Tiny 30’x68′ lot sizes. It’s still zoned RD2.2, so it’s either cleared for a larger house or an illegal parking lot.
Interesting… David, however, demolition permits are valid for one year… Did you see demolition permits for any other houses on Lincoln?
These houses have been down for at least a few months; I’ve been driving by this corner almost everyday since there were several inches of snow on the ground and the lot was empty. Been wondering myself what happened there. I have my doubts that it was for parking for the Gladstone/Back Street, but I could be wrong.
The final dates for the demo permit for 802 was June 27/08, for 808 – Dec 8/08, for 812 – Dec 29/08. For the last one, it only took them two and a half weeks for the permit to be issued.

Doubt the parking is for that bar. I think it’s mostly a local watering hole…pedestrian traffic is definitely the majority of their customers.
Is there anything going on with that old gas station? Maybe someone bought it and plan on using the land next to it for something.

My maiden name was Baker, my father John “Jack” Baker owned the Baker Bros. Esso Station between Villaire and Prado on Wyandotte St. in old Riverside and after being there many year bought the old Gray’s TV Appliance Store on the other side of the street and opened a Dairy Bar that my uncle Fred Baker ran…it is still called Baker’s (then it was Baker’s Dairy Bar and now it is Baker’s Bar & Grill) I would love to find old pictures, my parents died many years ago and before their death the pictures were lost in a basement flood….I would even pay for copies or reproductions if they could be found….I spent many years there in Riverside especially at Ma Patterson’s Fish and Chip place, now Pat and Hanks.

One more quick comment…when driving by the corner where Baker Bros. once stood…there is a large very ugly Ice Cream Cone place….it was sad to remember how lovely Riverside once was….

Now the old gas station is gone, and it’s still just a grassy lot. Just makes you wonder, why?
It seem more likely that the church next door is expanding or gaining parking
