Another building that falls under the category of places you drive past a million times…
Today, this building is home to Omeed’s Used Furniture, I remember it was for many years in my youth home to an H&R Block office.
A look back through the 1923-24 City Directory lists the following as being located at this location:
A. Minto & Company
Teas, Coffees, Crockery, Glassware & Fancy China, direct importations from Japan, Great Britain, France and United States.Phone Burnside 48
I’m not sure how old the building is, but it looks to be of the early to mid 1920’s vintage.
I’m sure there have been a great many businesses located in those walls over the last 85 or so years. Just one of the hundreds of the commercial buildings lining Wyandotte St. from west to east. If buildings could talk, I’m sure many of them would have interesting stories to spin about watching Windsor evolve over the years…

I think the address is 1492 Wyandotte E., not 1292, I'm not sure if that affects the company that you have listed as being there in '23/'24
Just a little side note on buildings past, while driving down Droullard (sp) I noticed building after building that were formerly business's that are converted to residences. It must be worthwile to change these rather than tear them down.I often try to name all of these buildings which were Bars going way back ??? There only four still left as bars today. ANY HELP with the names of the Bars & Taverns would be greatly appreciated ???
There used to be two or three big old trees next to this building, between the sidewalk and the parking lot (one right about where that blue van is parked). They weren't unhealthy but were cut down last year, probably to eke out another parking space. I know you generally care more about the buildings, but the loss of those trees really makes this corner look barren.
Jodi - I remember that. A younger (slimmer) version of me used to catch the bus at that stop. I recall all the trees on the site, but until you mentioned it, I had forgot about them.
For the record Jodi - I like trees too! :) Check this old post for my tree hugging showing through... http://internationalmetropolis.com/?p=331

Bob C. As for the address, if it's wrong, blame google :) http://www.weblocal.ca/omeed-used-furniture-windsor-on.html - Upon review it looks like that address was the old location. They must have recently moved. It doesn't affect the old information, because the City was renumbered in 1937, so anything prior to that had a different number anyways. The city directory lists the cross streets as well. There used to be a house on the corner back then, so it was the second building west of Gladstone.
- I looked into it, and the address is 1478 (the tree lot, was at one time 1482 but is now part of the same parcel.)
I remember Minto's from when I was a kid in the 50's.I never went inside but was fascinated by the skylight in the rear part of the building. Next door was the house where Dr Ken James had his dermatology practice. I saw his obituary in todays Star.
when i was going by on the bus last night the interior of the place looked all torn up and upside down. not sure what's going on with the business.
