So the other day in the post about the Norton-Palmer Hotel, the subject of the Algonquin Club came up. I did a little checking, and I tracked down a little infromation to post here from the current members of the club executive.
Founded in 1934, the Algonquin Club is still going strong:
The Algonquin Club is an educational, international, not-for-profit organization for the study of Great Lakes region history. Staffed entirely by volunteers, it is the only known transnational local history club. Membership is open to all people with an interest in the heritage of Detroit, Windsor and the Great Lakes. Currently, the total membership in Canada and the United States is over 130 people.
The Algonquian newsletter is published monthly, at least nine times annually, in both electronic and printed formats, and is distributed to all current members of the Algonquin Club. Members in good standing also receive an annual Roster of the entire membership. Other publications are undertaken periodically. The Algonquin Club is a founding and continuing sponsor of the annual Local History Conference at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Regular meetings of the Algonquin Club are held monthly from September through May with the venue alternating between the two border cities. An evening dinner is followed by a keynote address. Guests are welcome, but reservations are required.
