The Cleary Guest House is offically no more.
The Floral Compass, and a staircase now are the only remnanats of the Civic Centre renewal of the mid 1950’s.
Farewell to the Guest House, as more of Windsor’s History heads to the landfill.

They worked fast–I drove through the parking lot at 3AM Thursday morning and she was standing as solid as ever…must’ve got to work first thing Thursday morning.
That’s the City of Windsor for ya. They are quick to rip down historic landmarks but take their sweet time building the new stuff.
I remember watching the construction of the Hilton Hotel from the top floor of the Cleary Guest House back in 1982 or 1983. What a view!
I could understand trying to make the park look better but I do not think that they should have brought that building down as it was part of our history there was nothing wrong with that building there are other buildings in this city that are way worse then this one but they are still standing I think that they should have asked the public for there comments before they decided to do this I was a kid growing in the fifty’s and I rember this building being here but as alot of old buildings this one came down to we are losing to much history that is all i’m saying
Sorry… Am I the only one that thinks that building was ugly? 🙂
P.S. Did anyone catch Graston’s comic in the Star a week ago about the new bus terminal?
Scooter, I’m sure you’re not the only one. But Mid-centruy architecture is coming into its own as an accepted and appreciated stlye of architecture.

Andrew, when I saw that comic last week I thought of you right away. Wondered for a second if you even commissioned it. 😉
And Scooter, I’m right there with ya. While my appreciation of “mid century architecture” might be in need of fine tuning, I still insist that building had no redeeming qualities architecturally. I might suggest its demo might more bothersome to some in terms of the memories many people have associated with the building – not the building itself. Kinda like when that penny arcade you went to every day when you were a kid gets closed down and turned into a parking lot.
Sad day for Windsor.
